Accepting the importance of technological advancements in curbing various illegal activities in the Himahcal Pradesh, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Tuesday instructed the officials to suggest ways to use artificial intelligence (AI) in government’s functioning.

Addressing a conference on artificial intelligence and potential applications in HP, Thakur said the state is witnessing many issues as illegal mining, tree felling and unauthorised constructions.

“AI and technology could be helpful in checking illegal constructions and also in forest mapping to check illegal forest felling. The AI could emerge as an effective tool for ensuring effective and accountable administration. The illegal mining is another area which could be checked by optimum use of artificial intelligence,” he said.

He said that AI could also help in monitoring of ongoing developmental projects.

“Artificial Intelligence (AI) not only has tremendous economic potential but also social impact and it could also play a vital role in improving quality of life. In addition, the government would ensure its optimum use for effective, transparent, responsive and good governance to the people,” he said.

Thakur said the government would ensure maximum use of AI and technology for providing better governance and transparent administration. This technology would be used for monitoring of ongoing developmental projects to ensure their timely completion.

The CM said that numerous companies in India, particularly e-commerce businesses as well as many start-ups were beginning to exploit AI techniques. The most important challenge was to collect, validate, standardise, correlate, archive and distribute AI-relevant data and making it accessible.

The CM said although AI was being studied for decades still it was one of the most elusive subjects in computer sciences. Science had made tremendous progress and at one time even telephone was a miracle, but today we could not imagine of living without a mobile.

“20 years back one could not think of talking live with their friends or family members thousands of miles away while travelling in a car,” he said.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is committed to Digital India which is a step towards ensuring maximum use of technology.
