Two persons died and 26 others were injured when a private bus fell off a bridge on National Highway 26 on Friday.

The accident took place on the outskirts of Bhawanipatna town.

The bus that was on way from Bhubaneswar to Sinapali was reportedly allowing another vehicle to cross by when the driver apparently lost control and the vehicle went off the Lal Pulia Bridge. The bus landed on the ground after a 30-foot freefall.

Since the accident spot was close to the district headquarters, fire brigade and police personnel rushed to the spot and undertook the rescue operations with the help of locals.

The conductor of the bus Kalpataru Panda aged about 45 from Kuakhia of Jajpur district and a two-year-old girl Niharika Sahu, daughter of Maguni Sahu of Jarka in Jajpur district, died in the mishap.

Twenty-six passengers, including the driver and helper of the bus, sustained injuries and were admitted to Bhawanipatna Govt Hospital. Later, five of the injured were shifted to VSS Medical College, Burla. The condition of three injured is reported to be serious.
