SC likely to hear on Feb 19 pleas challenging law to appoint CEC, ECs

The Supreme Court is likely to hear on Wednesday a batch of petitions challenging the validity of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act 2023, that excludes the Chief Justice of India from a panel for the selection of the Chief Election (CEC) Commissioner and the Election Commissioners (ECs).

In a showdown with the Modi government for “intimidating” Tamil Nadu to accept the New Education Policy (NEP) and its three-language formula for release of Central funds for the state, Deputy Chief Minister and ruling DMK’s Youth Wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin, on Tuesday, warned that the BJP-led Union government’s haughtiness would only lead to another uprising against Hindi imposition.
