Heavy rainfall across Mumbai overnight led to waterlogging in several low-lying pockets of the city, disrupting movement and forcing authorities to shut the Andheri subway to vehicular traffic.

The closure of the busy underpass emerged as one of the most visible impacts of the continuing rain spell. Civic officials said water accumulation at the location was severe enough to make traffic movement unsafe, prompting restrictions while teams remained deployed on-site.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Andheri subway was submerged due to heavy waterlogging caused by incessant rainfall. The civic body said all other subways in the city remained operational and railway services continued to run normally.

Rainfall data released by the BMC showed that between 8 am and 11 pm on June 23, Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 56 mm. The eastern suburbs received 23 mm, while the western suburbs recorded 33 mm.

Several locations in the western suburbs witnessed intense rainfall between 10 pm and 11 pm. Charkop Sector 1 Municipal School in Kandivali recorded 32 mm during the hour. MHB Municipal School in Malad received 28 mm, while the Gajdharbandh Storm Water Pumping Station recorded 26 mm.

Other areas reporting significant rainfall included Banana Leaf and Juhu Dispensary with 22 mm and Nariyalwadi School in Santacruz with 21 mm.

Andheri underpass remains flooded

BMC official Rhitik said civic authorities had not yet found a temporary remedy to tackle the severe waterlogging at the Andheri subway.

“We have not been able to find a temporary solution for this severe waterlogging. Our officers keep standing here to ensure vehicles don’t pass through. But some rickshaw drivers still try to get their vehicles across. A rickshaw got stuck here in the centre of the subway. His life was in danger. Two of our officers helped bring him out,” he told ANI.

Another civic official, Robert, said teams were working continuously to prevent motorists from entering the flooded stretch.

“We are doing our best to ensure that no vehicles get inside the underpass. We are trying to protect as many people as possible,” he told ANI.

Waterlogging reported in other parts of city

Visuals from different areas of Mumbai showed roads battered by heavy rain through the night.

Authorities also closed a subway in Everard Nagar after water accumulated at the site. Traffic on the Eastern Express Highway continued, though vehicles were seen moving cautiously amid reduced visibility and waterlogged stretches.

In Sion, residents were seen venturing outdoors despite the weather, with a group of boys enjoying the rain and flooded streets.
