The syllabus for Class IX may change from 2020 and it is expected that the Madhyamik examination 2022 will be conducted as per the new syllabus
The West Bengal School Education Department or WBSED is reviewing the syllabi of classes IX and X. The Class IX syllabus may change from 2020 and it is expected that Class X students will appear in the Madhyamik examination as per the new WBSED syllabus in 2022.
Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said, “In the last meeting with the teachers associations they requested to review the syllabus for class IX and X. I have instructed the syllabus committee to review it and document the points where the changes are required. According to that, we will consider making changes in the syllabus.”
According to the rules relating to the Madhyamik examination syllabus, changes can be made in the syllabus every five years. In 2017, the state government had appointed the syllabus reform committee and brought in a new syllabus to remove the disparities in marking system between the Madhyamik board and its national counterparts. Madhyamik candidates of 2017 gave the examination under the new question pattern where multiple choice questions or short type questions were included to encourage thorough text reading instead of long essay type questions.

Abhik Majumder, syllabus committee chairman, said: “The syllabus committee received a recommendation to review the entire syllabus for class IX and X from the education department and education minister last week. The process is on. Soon we will submit a proposed syllabus to the department.”
According to that, the proposals will be sent to the school education department and the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education for their final nod. Changes will be made for the candidates who will be appearing in Madhyamik examination in 2022.”
Swapan Mondal, general secretary of the Bengal Teachers and Employees Association (BTEA), commenting on the matter, said: “We have requested the education minister to bring certain changes in the syllabus as the change is required. He considered it and has asked for a review.”
