During the probe, it was found that Kumar had absented from duties and gone to Kupwara along with a colleague and his uncle, Head Constable Dileep Kumar, the spokesman said.

"After dropping his uncle at district police lines in Kupwara, the constable reached Yonsoo bridge at Chogal, Handwara, and jumped into the Puhroo river reportedly under the influence of liquor," the official said.

Police have started a search for the missing constable, he said.

"Every effort is being made to trace the constable.

Marine commandos of Navy are also being pressed into service along with the river police," the spokesman said, adding that all angles are being probed.
