Seven senior CPI-M leaders, including a Gram Panchayat candidate of the party, were arrested on charges of attacking a Trinamul Congress candidate in Andal.
The ACJM court on Sunday ordered seven days in police custody for the accused.
Trinamul Congress candidate for the number 13 seat of Madanpur Panchayat in Andal ~ Mr Gunomoy Ghosh ~ was attacked allegedly by his rival candidate from the CPI-M, Mr Bablu Mondal, and his aides at Polashbon village.
“They attacked me suddenly and Ghosh had a sharp knife in his hand. He waved the weapon repeatedly and I sustained three injuries in my neck,” Mr Ghosh said.
The injured candidate was rushed to the Durgapur S D Hospital, from where he was shifted to a private tertiary care hospital.
Trinamul Congress supporters reacted to the incident and attacked at least six houses of CPI-M supporters. The police deployed one contingent of Rapid Action Force personnel to quell the outrage.
Later seven CPI-M leaders and cadres, including Mr Ghosh, zonal committee leader Mr Moloy Basu Roy, and Citu&’s state committee leader, Mr Vishnudeo Nunia, were booked.
Meanwhile, re-polling passed peacefully in one booth in Saltora block in Bankura, registering 86 per cent polling on Sunday.
Re-polling was ordered in booth number 43/2 in Saltora, where voting had to be postponed on the day of election last Thursday when intruders had allegedly assaulted the first polling officer and destroyed and robbed some ballot papers. The booth had 541 voters and on Sunday it recorded
