Caves, the original homes of human species, are a natural wonder, which beauty and underground structures and the mysterious dark and deep realms are filled with legendary tales and folklores. Hence, visiting and exploring caves on a pleasure trip can be a thrilling experience of a lifetime. Ajanta and Ellora Caves and the Elephanta Island Caves are the most famous caves in India. Here are some of the lesser-known beautiful caves in India worth visiting.

Tabo Caves, Himachal Pradesh

The Tabo Caves is located in beautiful Lahaul Spiti up in Himachal Pradesh. It lies just above the ancient Tabo Monastery.  The cave leads to several rooms. Small dwelling caves are carved out of this huge magnificent cave for the monks to live in, and some bigger ones as halls for them to gather together. Its calm and peaceful vicinity makes it an idyllic place for spiritual dwelling. One can reach Lahaul Spiti via Shimla or Manali.

Tharon Cave, situated in Manipur’s Tamenglong district, is hardly visited by the world outside, but it is of great archaeological and historical significance. It is located amid dense forest about 3 km away from Tharon village in Tamenglong. The cave is said to be 655.5 metres long with five exits. It has low passage in some areas where one has to crawl, and leads to bigger hall-like chambers where, in olden days, villagers used to perform folk dances during auspicious occasions.

Meghalaya has many caves worth visiting. Mawsmai is one of them. Located 6 km away from the Sohra market in Mawsmai village, East Khasi Hills, near Bangladesh border, it is the only cave, which is fully lighted. It has several large chambers. About 58 km from Shillong, Mawsmai Cave is one of the most accessible caves for visitors or travellers.

Pukzing Cave, Mizoram

It is the biggest cave in Mizoram. The cave is situated in the western hills of Aizawl, at Pukzing village. Locals have many stories about it.  According to one legend, the cave was carved out by a strong man Mualzavata.
