“The expansion strategy is an effort to promote shared mobility in India with UberPOOL allowing people heading in the same direction to take the same ride,” Uber said in a statement.
UberPOOL started in September 2015. It gives users an option to share a ride with 1-2 passengers heading in the same direction, and thus save money eventually.
Uber’s biggest rival Ola also started Ola Share right after UberPOOL in October 2015. However, Ola is ahead in terms of ride-sharing presence with 26 Indian cities. Ola Share claims a 500% growth in last one year (June, 2016 – June, 2017).
