A massive landslide struck near the under-construction Anakkompoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi twin-tunnel road site on Tuesday turned Wayanad into a disaster zone again.
Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan said that he has directed Revenue Minister A.P. Anil Kumar and Agriculture Minister T. Siddique to reach the spot.
On the occasion, the Congress leader praised the resilience and compassion of Wayanad residents, saying, “You lost a lot, but not your courage or your humanity.”
Kumar accused the BJP of indulging in politics and using the disaster as a tool to “financially choke” the state that he said has consistently rejected the saffron outfit’s agenda.
The Kerala Government has decided to declare individuals missing in the Mundakkai, Churalmala landslides as deceased. This decision aims to facilitate financial aid distribution to their families, as previously announced for deceased victims.
The Central Government on Monday declared the Wayanad landslide a disaster of "severe nature," five months after the calamity claimed 254 lives and left 128 people missing.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister MB Rajesh, who moved the resolution, highlighted the urgent need for Central aid for the rehabilitation of the affected people.
In cases where the deceased has no immediate family, the aid will be given to the closest relatives, provided they present a succession certificate, he said.
Following the heavy rain, the footoverbridge constructed over the Chooralmala river for search and rescue operations was destroyed by the raging river. The cow that was swept away by the gushing riverwaters was rescued by fire force personnel with much effort.
