Indo-Pacific Tensions

The recent assembly of naval officials from around the globe in China’s Qingdao, hosted by the Chinese Navy, is an emblematic event that reveals the intricacies of diplomacy and power in the contested waters of the South China Sea.

Aid Victory

In the face of geopolitical turmoil and escalating threats, the passage of a $95 billion aid package by the US House of Representatives stands as a beacon of hope and solidarity for the country’s allies in distress.

America united

In fact, 49 per cent of Democrats and 48 per cent of Republicans believe that Russia is “an immediate and serious threat” to the USA, and a significant majority of those polled believe a new Cold war is on the anvil.

US and Taiwan

Indeed the Russian aggression of Ukraine has focused attention on China’s threat to use force to annex self-governing democratic Taiwan, which it claims as its own territory. Circumstances are rather different, however. Taiwan is situated 160 km across the Taiwan Strait from mainland China. It enjoys strong support from the United States, which is legally bound to ensure the island can defend itself and treat all threats to it as matters of grave concern.

Cold War redux?

Elaine Kamarck and William A. Galston of the Brookings Institute have written in an article published recently, the question that no one, including the US President, could answer was: Will a new Cold War begin, and what shape will it take? After the end of the WW II, say Kamarck and Galston, it took a while for Americans to see the Soviet Union as the “Empire of Evil” that it was to become for the West in the following decades.

Self-defence

Events in eastern Europe of the past few days, when the West appeared to lead on Ukraine only to leave it at Russia’s mercy may harden the resolve of the Korean people. When the Americans withdrew from the peninsula in 1971, South Korea had announced plans to develop nuclear weapons. But under American pressure, it abandoned the programme, although there have been sporadic reports of the country’s scientists working to enrich plutonium to weapons-grade.

On Iran’s terms’

To ensure effective implementation of their demands, the legislators called for an unspecified “verification” process, after which Iran would act to scale back its nuclear advances to come into full compliance with the terms of the JCPOA again. After waiting for a year following the US exit, Iran started gradually boosting its nuclear capabilities in 2019.
