Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has welcomed the conviction of Tahir Hussain in the Delhi riots case, saying that the verdict marks an important step towards justice for the families who lost their loved ones and endured immense suffering during the 2020 violence.
The prosecution plans to seek the maximum punishment, Delhi Police says its investigation stood judicial scrutiny, and AAP maintains Tahir Hussain has had no association with the party since his suspension in February 2020.
Posting the matter for Wednesday after a brief hearing on Tuesday, a bench of Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah asked Delhi police to come prepared with its submissions on Hussain’s plea for interim bail for his election campaign.
Adjourning the hearing for Tuesday due to the paucity of time, a bench of Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, however, remarked: “These days elections are contested from jail … It’s easy to win an election sitting in jail … all such persons should be barred from contesting.”
The Delhi High Court on Monday questioned the necessity of granting interim bail to Tahir Hussain for the purpose of filing his election nomination in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls.
