According to police, more than 10 thousand devotees had gathered at the Sri Venkateswara temple to celebrate Ekadashi. When a group of devotees attempted to enter the temple from the exit point, chaos ensued, and the situation quickly transformed into a stampede, leading to deaths and injuries.
Transferring the case to the CBI, the apex court kept under suspension a one-man judicial inquiry commission constituted by the DMK government, within hours of the tragedy struck, and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) ordered by a single Judge of Madras High Court on October 3.
