Rescue operations continued for the third day to evacuate 40 workers still trapped inside an under-construction tunnel that collapsed on Sunday.
The locals said that the people affected by the landslide, have been assured by the government that they will get pre-fabricated houses.
Eyewitnesses described hearing what sounded like thunder before seeing a huge cloud of dust in the aftermath of the collapse. One compared the scene to the 11 September 2001 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York.
The “head race” tunnel at the Tapovan hydel project site where 30-35 workers have been trapped since 7 February, remains the focal point of rescue operations.
Amidst the chaos of stone pelting and burning down of houses several victims remained stranded for hours in the unknown galis of the localities.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar said that the presence of hard rocks in the area has made digging difficult, adding that the rescue operation is in the final stage.
