While flagging off 2,500 bags of wheat seeds to the state, the Chief Minister said that Punjab has played a historic role in achieving the goal of agricultural self-reliance in independent India.
Calling the Centre’s initial relief package of Rs 1,600 crore a “grave injustice” to the people of Punjab, Gandhi noted that the state’s estimated losses stand at nearly Rs 20,000 crore.
In a letter dated September 16, 2025 addressed to the prime minister, Rahul Gandhi emphasized the inadequacy of the Rs 1,600 crore initial relief announced by the Union government considering the state's estimated loss of at least Rs 20,000 crore.
Informing about the relief measures being carried out in the state, CM Mann said that the cleanup work has begun in the flood-affected villages.
Interacting with the media persons, the Chief Minister said that as Floodwaters have now receded from many areas, but a large amount of silt and dirt still remains across villages and towns
Terming the PM announcement as nothing more than a token gesture, they said it amounts to adding insult to injury for millions of people who have lost their homes, livelihoods and crops in one of the most devastating floods in Punjab’s history.
The cumulative tally now stands at 2,097 affected villages across 22 districts, with the impacted population touching 3,88,092.
A decision to this effect was taken by the Council of Ministers in its meeting held here under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister, who joined it virtually from Fortis Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment.
With Punjab reeling under devastation caused by massive flooding in several parts of the state, Mann announced that farmers will receive compensation of Rs 20,000 per acre, with cheques handed directly to them.
Kumar, who recently visited the flood-affected villages of Fazilka district, described the scale of destruction as "overwhelming," with entire stretches of farmland submerged, crops destroyed, cattle perished, and homes reduced to rubble.
