Stock market extends winning steak; PSU bank at new high

On the BSE Sensex, 13 of the 30 stocks ended in the red with TCS, Tech Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki India, Reliance Industries, and Titan were the top drags for the day. JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Power Grid Corp., Kotak Mahindra Bank, and UltraTech Cement, were the top gainers.
Sensex was up 599.34 points, or 0.83 per cent at 73,088.33, while the Nifty was up 151.20 points or 0.69 per cent at 22,147.
Sensex closed with a loss of 455 points, or 0.62%, at 72,488.99 while the Nifty 50 ended the day at 21,995.85, down 152 points, or 0.69%.
The losses were weighed on investors' risk appetite who will also closely track March quarter results at home.
ONGC was the top loser, shedding around 6.50 per cent, followed by M&M, Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank, PowerGrid, HDFC Bajaj Finance and ICICI Bank.
Trading at the Nifty50 was halted at 11:40 a.m. and resumed only at 3:30 p.m. after a glitch resulted in stopping of rate updates.
In the broader markets, the S&P BSE MidCap and SmallCap were down by 1.10 per cent and 0.66 per cent respectively.
Broader markets BSE midcap and smallcap followed the frontline indices’ trend and surged to end up to 1.40 per cent and 0.37 per cent respectively.
Gainers of the Sensex pack were led by Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M), soaring around 7 per cent, followed by Bajaj Finserv, Bharti Airtel, PowerGrid, Infosys and ICICI Bank.
