The authorities of Visva-Bharati University (VBU) have decided that this year’s Poush Mela will be held after securing all necessary clearances from the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The direction came from a bench comprising Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Chairperson, and Dr. A. Senthil Vel, expert member, while hearing an application filed by Rita Sharma and others against the State of Himachal Pradesh and others.
The matter originated from a letter petition by Shailendra Kumar Yadav, highlighting ecological damage caused by the uncontrolled movement of horses in the reserved forest area of Kufri and its impact on natural vegetation and local ecology.
The NGT’s direction was in response to the petition moved by two local residents alleging extensive degradation of the river bed and extraction.
The NGT’s direction came in the wake of a petition moved by Alekha Chandra Tripathy, a resident of Cuttack. The petitioner had drawn the attention of the green panel and had alleged that the authorities of JSPL’s steel plant filled up the Kurdabahali Nalla with earth and built its industrial complex thereon.
The inspection was carried in pursuance to the directions of NGT and suggesting remedial action for preventing discharge of sewage and dumping of solid waste on the banks of Doodganga River and Mamath Kull.
Acting on a petition moved by Kshitish Kumar Singh, a division bench of NGT comprising Justice Amit Sthalekar and judicial member Saibal Dasgupta issued notices to central and State government agencies returnable within four weeks by ruling that ‘the matter requires consideration’.
