Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing on Monday held extensive bilateral talks in New Delhi, reaffirming their commitment to deepen cooperation across trade, investment, connectivity, security, technology and development sectors, while underscoring that peace and stability in Myanmar remain vital for regional security and the wider Southeast Asian region.

A year on

While it is true that the world has invested in Myanmar’s democratic transition over the past decade, the unbelievably naïve dumping of Ms Suu Kyi as the best bet for the country because she allegedly defended the military action against Rohingya insurgents in Rakhine state (while being critical of excesses by the security forces) has been the international community’s cardinal error.

While the court is yet to respond to the nature of Myanmar’s representation at the hearings, “there is little doubt that if it is the junta that is in court, this is not something that should be taken to confer legitimacy on the junta this is not something that should be taken to confer legitimacy on the junta,” is the reaction of the Global Justice Centre.
