India's coal sector continues to play a vital role in fueling the nation's energy needs while simultaneously driving significant employment growth, the government claimed on Monday.
Among the eight core industries, the coal sector has demonstrated the highest growth of 10.2 per cent among the eight core industries for January 2024, the Ministry of Coal said on Friday.
The quicker coal movement in the country also reflects the better performance of Indian Railways. The faster movement of coal also enables power plants to function more efficiently.
The increase in production comes on the back of the successful implementation of policy reforms by the government which include measures such as the transparent e-auction of commercial mines.

While Coal India Ltd (CIL) and its subsidiaries produced 534.7 lakh tonnes of coal, production by Singareni Colleries Company Ltd (SCCL) stood at 53.23 lakh tonnes and production from captive mines touched 73.61 lakh tonnes during April.
Indian Railways is grappling with the problem of damaged wagons that is not only affecting its normal operations but also leading to delay in coal supplies. To manage the crisis the Railways has spent more than Rs 150 crore in repairing around 2000 damaged and dilapidated wagons over the last four months to augment coal movement to power plants, official data has revealed.
To ensure a swift supply of coal across power plants, additional trains and rakes by Indian Railways have been initiated to augment the transportation of coal through its network, the Ministry of Railways said in a statement.
