A two-storey building on Thursday collapsed in Kabir Nagar, Welcome killing two and critically injuring one person, an official said.
A day has passed but there are concerns about two more people still being trapped under the concrete in Garden Reach.
Nine other injured are also undergoing treatment at a nursing home close to the accident site.
Since the banks in the building were closed today, there was not much activity, leading to less rush of people in the building.
“This was a ghastly incident. The KMC had already warned the residents of the building regarding a possible collapse. The structure was identified in the KMC’s dangerous building category but no heed was paid to our warnings. Such incidents will continue unless there are proper laws to strengthen eviction in cases where residents are continuing to live despite the precarious condition of the building.”
Some patients also fell down with the crashing slab as there was a small clinic on the upper floor of the ground-plus-storied structure.
The incident comes barely two weeks after a residential building crumbled to the ground in the Dongri area of Maharashtra’s Mumbai killing at least 14 people.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.
An audit had classified the building as C1, meaning that it has to be evacuated for demolition at the earliest.
MHADA Chairman Uday Samant said the building, located in Dongri area, was under their jurisdiction but given to a private builder for re-development.
