This is the first flight from the UK after the services were suspended between the two nations on December 23 over the new and more contagious strain of the virus.
The flight, with 130 passengers and 6 crew, took off at around 1.20 am and was diverted to Mumbai where it made a safe emergency landing around 5.40 a.m.
The airport authorities have started a probe into the freak accident while technicians in Mumbai are examining the damaged aircraft.
Indrani Ghosh, daughter of the woman passenger, took to Twitter and narrated the incident saying her mother had to face extreme shock and trauma.
