Full emergency was declared at the Thiruvananthapuram airport on Monday after a Sharjah-bound Air India Express flight from Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, made an emergency landing due to a technical snag.
Amid the losses that the aviation sector incurred during the Covid pandemic, Air India Express, India's first budget airline on regional international routes, reported a net loss - for the first time in seven years - of Rs 72.33 crore in FY2022, against a net profit of Rs 98.21 crore in FY2021.
As per the UAE government rules, each passenger travelling from India needs to bring an original Covid-negative certificate from RT-PCR test done 96 hours prior to the journey.
"Who is accountable and responsible for unwarranted expenditures arising out of such acts of omission and commission by the senior executives such as Hemlata and Ravikumar, both being from Finance Department and under the control of Director, Finance, Air India, V. Hejmadi. Most importantly, when the company is going through financial turbulence as well as a disinvestment process, what leadership and direction has been shown by Hejmadi to his subordinates," the union said.
Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has already declared that Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau will hold a detailed enquiry into the accident.
Wing Commander Deepak V Sathe has flown the MiG-21 fighter aircraft with 17 Squadron (Golden Arrows) in Ambala before shifting to civilian flying and joining Air India.
The aircraft, which made a hard-landing, broke in two after falling off the ‘table-top’ Kozhikode airport, but did not catch fire and thus averted a greater disaster.
The aircraft with 190 persons onboard battled heavy rains while landing. Although the aircraft broke in two, it, fortunately did not catch fire at the time of landing, thus averting a major disaster.
The deadline for submission of Expression of Interest (EoI) for 100 per cent divestment in Air India and the airline's stake in low-cost unit Air India Express and airport services company AISATS is March 17.
