Arsenal’s top-four hopes were given a hammer blow when the Gunners lost 3-1 to Swansea City on Tuesday night and custodian Petr Cech took to Twitter for playing his part in an embarrassing defeat, with the veteran culpable of a calamitous mistake in the build-up to the Swans’ second goal.
While Cech’s candour is appreciable, fans will be hoping the experienced shot-stopper gets his act together, for his blunder swung the momentum firmly in the way of the Welsh outfit in a rain-sodden Premier League game at the Liberty Stadium.
After Nacho Monreal had given the North Londoners the lead in the 33rd minute, Swansea responded with a goal of their own barely a minute later via Sam Clucas.
The tie was evenly poised at half-time, for despite Swansea enjoying better chances, the fact that Arsenal had several quality players in their lineup meant that the Gunners were stilll in the hunt.
Disaster struck for the travelling side when Cech made a hash of a seemingly-routine backpass, allowing Andre Ayew to tap-in from close range on the hour-mark.
The Gunners never recovered from their setback and Sam Clucas would make sure of the result when he powered in from inside the box with six minutes left in the tie.
Currently, Arsenal are in sixth place, three points behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur (who play Manchester United in their game in hand on Wednesday) and a considerable eight behind Liverpool, who occupy fourth spot.
Their quest to finish in the top-four is getting bleaker by the day but with the club expected to announce the signing of Borussia Dortmund Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on Wednesday, fans are hopeful a late charge will see them overhaul the likes of Liverpool and Spurs.
