Great honour to be BCCI President: Sourav Ganguly

Ganguly’s appointment will, however, be a short one as he will have to go in for a cooling off period from September 2020, under the new rules.

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly, who on Wednesday became the first cricketer in 65 years to take charge as full-time BCCI President after Maharaja of Vizianagaram in 1954, termed it as a matter of ‘great honour’.

Ganguly, a veteran of 113 Tests and 311 one-day internationals, arrived at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday for the Annual General Meeting where he officially took charge as the President. Notably, Dada had filed his nomination for the role of BCCI president after a dramatic turn of events in a meeting earlier this month.

Taking to Twitter, the 47-year-old shared a picture of him sitting in the board’s headquarter and wrote: “It’s a great honour.”

Along with Ganguly, Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah was made the Secretary. Kerala’s Jayesh George was appointed as BCCI Joint Secretary, while Mahim Verma of Uttarakhand became the new Vice President.

It is to note that Ganguly’s appointment will, however, be a short one as he will have to go in for a cooling off period from September 2020, under the new rules.

“I am happy with the appointment because this is the time when BCCI’s image has got hampered and it’s a great opportunity for me to do something. Whether you are elected unopposed or otherwise, it’s a big responsibility because it is the biggest organisation in the world of cricket. India is a powerhouse. It will be a challenge,” Ganguly had said earlier.
