American boxer Partick Day died on Wednesday in Chicago after succumbing to a traumatic brain injury which he suffered after being knocked out in the 10th round of his fight against Charles Conwell on Saturday.

The 27-year-old junior middleweight was in coma for four days after his defeat. Despite going through an emergency brain surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the doctors were unable to save the boxer.

“Patrick Day passed away today, October 16, 2019, succumbing to the traumatic brain injury he suffered in his fight this past Saturday, October 12, at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, IL,” his promoter Lou DiBella was quoted as saying by news agency Reuters.

His brother thanked everyone who was praying for his well being and expressed his gratitude for all the love people had shown for Day since he picked up the injury. The boxer was taken to the hospital right after he was left motionless in the ring following a flurry of punches by Conwell.

Day had won two national titles and was a highly decorated amateur before he turned pro in 2013 and became a world-rated super welterweight contender. He bagged the WBC Continental Americas Championship in 2017 and followed it with a triumph in the IBF Intercontinental Championship in 2019. He was rated in the top 10 by WBC and IBF in June this year.

Day becomes the third boxer who died this year due to injuries suffered in the ring. In July this year, 23-year-old Argentine super lightweight Hugo Santillan passed away before 28-year-old Maxim Dadashev died two days earlier after picking up brain injuries during his fight.

Day’s promoter, meanwhile, demanded action to make the sport of boxing safer for its participants. “This is not a time where edicts or pronouncements are appropriate, or the answers are readily available. It is, however, a time for a call to action,” DiBella said.

“While we don’t have the answers, we certainly know many of the questions, have the means to answer them, and have the opportunity to respond responsibly and accordingly and make boxing safer for all who participate,” he added.
