Embarrassment piles on embarrassment. Having lost the edge to Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn in opinion polls, the British Prime Minister now contends with another crisis of credibility less than a week before the second parliamentary election in two years. Theresa May has without question faced a loss of face with the accusation that she is “Donald Trump’s mole” in Europe… in the context of reports that the UK attempted to water down EU policies designed to tackle climate change. While the revelation has brought her visit to the US under a cloud, the development is bound to have an impact on the attitude of the principal stakeholders towards both America and Britain.

Not that negotiators at the high table in Paris are not privy to Trump’s perception on climate change; what may yet cause consternation is that leaked documents show that Ms May’s United Kingdom wanted to change the EU targets on energy efficiency and renewable energy that would not apply until after the expected date for Brexit. While other European countries have made it clear to the occupant of the White House that his denial of climate science could turn out to be an impediment for the talks to attain fruition, the British Prime Minister has been diplomatically silent on the issue. Ms May is seemingly anxious to forge a strong relationship with President Trump… and change the terms of engagement in matters environmental.

The leaked documents, obtained by Greenpeace’s Energydesk, are suggestive of Britain’s attempt to forge a policy on energy efficiency… by making the task voluntary rather than mandatory. There is no mistaking the inexplicable anxiety to play to the White House gallery on so contentious a global issue.

No less important must be the fact that the effort has been initiated at a critical juncture ~ when the UK is gearing up for an election on 8 June, when Ms May’s electoral ratings have started to slip, when Britain is poised to step out of the European Union, and when Jeremy Corbyn has emerged as a factor to reckon with. Small wonder that the Conservatives have declined comment on Ms May’s overtures in Washington.

We do not know whether Ms May has gone off at a tangent; yet we do know that she has in principle decided to scrap the Cabinet post dedicated to climate change. Which explains the reaction of Barry Gardiner, the shadow International Trade Secretary ~ “After the G7 meeting, the word was put out that six countries were on track, pursuing the objective of the Paris Agreement. Only one country, America, was out of step.

That simply has been proven not to be the case by this leak, which shows Donald Trump actually has a mole within the EU and that mole is the UK”. A fairly damning indictment that thickens the trans-Atlantic plot.
