Nirjala Ekadashi is one of the auspicious events in Hindu mythology that helps in washing away all sins. On this day devotees are blessed by the ruler of Ekadashi – Lord Vishnu. He grants them happiness, prosperity and a bright future. This Ekadashi is equivalent to going on pilgrimage and provides virtue of all 24 Ekadashis falling in a year.

Due to the legend associated with Nirjala Ekadashi, it is also known as Pandava Ekadashi or Bhima Ekadashi. Bhima, the second Pandava brother was very fond of food. Hence, he was not able to observe all Ekadashi fasting like his four brothers, mother Kunti and wife Draupadi did. Being upset due to his weak determination, he felt that he was dishonouring Lord Vishnu. He went to sage Vyasa to seek advice. Sage Vyasa advised him to observe single Ekadashi fasting and compensate for not observing all Ekadashi fasting falling in a year.

This year it will be observed on 24th June 2018 as it is the 11th day of the brighter half of lunar month – Jyestha. To move closer to the almighty and attain spiritual consciousness, devotees observe fast and meditate. Nirjala means without water. Hence fast is observed not only without food but without water as well. It is considered the most strict and hence most sacred of all Ekadashi fasts.

The day starts with waking up early in the morning and have a bath. Then the idol of Lord Vishnu is washed with panchamrit and clean water. It is then dressed in new clothes and offered flowers, scented water, lamps and Durva grass. Bhajans and Vishnu Sahasranama are chanted throughout the day and Jagran is observed at night. Devotees eat a meal without rice on the previous day. Post that, they are not supposed to have anything the entire duration of the fast.

This Ekadashi falls during peak summer season. It provides a good opportunity to do charity and elevate your good karmas to the next level. Donating cool things on this special day is considered very favourable – let’s see what items one can donate.

Drinking water, cold beverages like rooafza, shikanji, milkshakes, sodas, squashes, buttermilk, summer fruits like mangoes, muskmelon, watermelon, green vegetables, umbrellas, hand fans, ceiling fans, coolers, air conditioners, cool jugs, clothes, seven types of grains (cooked or uncooked) and many more things can be given to needy people. You can also plant a tree that can give shade to people in the scorching heat of summer.

This is the most pious among all 24 Ekadashis in a year that can bring health and vibrancy. Keep fast and donate according to your pocket to benefit maximum out of this exceptional day.

Happy Nirjala Ekadashi To All!
