The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, today approved the constitution of an Inter-Ministerial Group to clear the backlog of railway projects estimated at Rs 2 lakh crore.
 The IMG, consisting of the chairman, Railway Board, finance secretary and secretary, Planning Commission, has been asked to expedite work on the projects that have been pending for long. “The group will come up with a creative financing-cum-implementation mechanism for enhancing investment and for clearing backlog of projects of an estimated Rs 2 lakh crore in a prioritised manner,” said an official of the Prime Minister’s Office.
The steering committee constituted to accelerate infrastructure investment would also hold its first meeting on 19 July to discuss infrastructure projects related to Mumbai Elevated Railway Corridor Project, two locomotive projects, and accelerating the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The committee, headed by the Principal Secretary in the PMO, has been monitoring the preparation and main infrastructure projects. In its first meeting, the committee has invited secretaries in various departments and ministries to monitor the preparation and award of projects with an estimated cost of Rs 1 lakh crore.
