Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power at the Centre, over the #MeToo allegations against Union minister MJ Akbar.

Addressing a rally at Sheopur in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, the 48-year-old Congress chief took on the BJP governments at the Centre and the State over a host of issues including farmer suicides, unemployment and Rafale deal.

“Fingers are being raised at Modi’s Minister, but our Prime Minister is silent,” he said referring to Akbar, who has been accused by over 10 women of sexual harassment during his time as a journalist.

“The BJP’s slogan of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (save girls, educate them) must now be reframed into ‘BJP ke mantri aur MLA se beti bachao’ (save daughters from BJP Minister, MLA),” said Gandhi.

Slamming the Modi government for making “false promises”, Gandhi said that wherever “Mr. Modi goes, he makes false promises”.

“He promised 2 crore jobs, 15 lakh in every account and right MSPs to farmers. None of these were fulfilled,” he said.

“Do you remember the day when in the name of demonetisation, he forced you to stand in queue outside banks?” Gandhi asked the gathering.

Commenting on the snub given to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in the Dassault Rafale deal, Gandhi said, “HAL has been manufacturing aircraft for the last 70+ years. HAL aircraft protected the nation during times of war and hence UPA government had given the Rafale deal to HAL. But PM Modi changed the deal and gave it to Anil Ambani.”

Gandhi also raised the issue of rising petrol prices against falling global crude oil prices.

“PM Modi is taking money from people’s pockets and filling the pockets of a handful of rich corporate,” he alleged.

Not missing out on an opportunity to slam Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Gandhi said that Madhya Pradesh topped the country in terms of malnutrition and was one of the least developed states.

He also fired at the state government over the Vyapam scam.

“Vyapam scam destroyed education in Madhya Pradesh. Those who committed the scam were never arrested. Everyone knows who was involved in the e-tendering scam,” he said.

Urging people to vote for Congress, Gandhi said that the people should take a cue from promises made by Modi and see the “21,000 promises” made by Chouhan in that context.
