In a tragic incident during a religious function, an elephant trampled to death three people including an infant in the district on Thursday.

According to the reports, the animal went berserk during a yagya ceremony held at Mohammadpur Mafi village of Jagatbela in the Tiwaripur area. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and has ordered compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the relatives of each victim.

As per the eye-witness account of the incident, the elephant, which was brought at the yagya site, was visibly annoyed by the noise and people taking selfies. The pachyderm soon went out of the control of his owner.

The elephant started running on the road attacking whoever came his way creating panic among the passersby. In the rampage, the jumbo killed three and injured several others.

Police and Forest Department officials rushed to the spot as soon as the incident was reported. But by the time they arrived the elephant had gone into the fields. It has yet to be captured.

Villagers say preparations were on before taking the Yagya’s Kalash Yatra out. The Elephant was also brought to join the procession. Around 1,000 people were present on the occasion.

On seeing the elephant at the place, some people started taking selfies with it which irked the animal along with loud noise.  Two women Kanti Devi (55), Kaushalya Devi (50) and Kaushalya’s grandson Krishna (4) were killed in the incident.
