BJP’s Member of Parliament from North-west Delhi, Yogendra Chandolia on Friday visited the Sharma Colony in North West Delhi’s Kirari, the same area that has been in news over being water logged for several months, with dirty water entering homes and people suffering in the adverse living conditions.

Chandolia reviewed the situation on ground accompanied by officials concerned from agencies like Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and interacted with the residents, listening to their concerns.

Speaking to UNI, the parliamentarian shared that the current situation in the area is the result of unplanned and unscientific work done by different agencies of the government in the area without proper coordination and scientific planning. He said that the area has many unauthorised colonies and there had been no functional sewer lines or drainage facilities for a long time.

Because of the topography of the area, Chandolia said, people living in the low lying areas are bearing the brunt of water logging and flooding while people living in the elevated areas are largely unaffected.

The waste water from the households used to empty out earlier into a pretty large swathe of DDA land of approx 40 acres nearby. When that empty land was now being filled and levelled by the authorities, the dirty water coming in from the drains eventually started reversing thus overwhelming the drainage system, the MP said.

Chandolia also alleged total neglect of the area by the previous MLA and the government, leading to the current mess.

He said that the issue will be addressed at a faster pace now by linking the drainage system of the colony to the Sewerage Treatment Plant being made in Pratap Vihar.

He noted that if the previous government had done something concrete for the area during the past eleven years, the situation would not have been this bad.

The audit which was conducted regarding the work done in the area has exposed planning failures during earlier government’s tenure. Chandolia said that the sewage infrastructure was created without matching treatment capacity, which indicates there was lack of integration and scientific planning among different agencies of the government.

He said that the current government has already sanctioned Rs 9.4 cr. for Sharma Colony development projects, while drain improvement and outfall connectivity is being worked out through the Mubarakpur drain.

In order to find a lasting solution to flooding and water logging, the Delhi government has announced major projects including a new drain from Mundka Halt to Supplementary Drain, a Rs 220 crore project, which would cover approx. 1,520-acre catchment area.

Kirari–Rithala Trunk Drain is also being built which is a 7.2 km trunk drain, with a carrying capacity of 1,160 cusecs and the project is estimated to cost Rs 250 crore.

Other such ongoing projects in North West Delhi also include the Rohtak Road drain remodeling, which is being done by the Irrigation and Flood Control department and the PWD.
