It was supposed to be just another regular day in recording studio in Mumbai. But for veteran singer Udit Narayan, the recording of “Bole Chudiyaan” from 2011 blockbuster ‘Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham’ turned into frantic scramble against the clock.

Speaking recently on ‘Indian Idol’, Udit revealed how a routine recording session quickly became a tense showdown with time. “I had a live show to get to, my bags were already checked in at the airport. And I was running out of minutes,” he recalled.

He tried to hand off the work, saying, “I told Jatin ji, take everyone’s voice, I’ll give a rough track because I’m stressed. If I miss my flight, I’ll be in big trouble.” But the composer duo Jatin-Lalit wasn’t ready to compromise. They insisted he record the final lines immediately.

The situation soon escalated into a brief argument before Udit made a mad dash to the airport hoping he could catch his flight. Just as he thought the crisis was over, the phone rang again. “You only have a line or two left,” the recording team reminded him. With luggage already in the air, he had no choice but to rush back to the studio, finish the song, and sprint once more to the airport. He barely made it on time.

Reflecting on that hectic day, Udit quoted Swami Vivekananda: “If you want to make history, you have to fight alone.”

The singer’s career spans much more than just one hectic recording session. He has sung in multiple languages including Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, Sindhi, Odia, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Malayalam, Assamese, Bagheli, Maithili. Udit has also been recognised with four National Film Awards for songs like ‘Mitwa’ (‘Lagaan’), ‘Jaane Kyon Log’ (‘Dil Chahta Hai’), ‘Chote Chote Sapne Zindagi Khoobsoorat Hai’, ‘Yeh Taara Woh Taara’ (‘Swades’).

The Indian government honoured him with Padma Shri in 2009. He received Padma Bhushan in 2016.
