Siddharth Anand, the acclaimed director behind the recent film ‘Fighter,’ has found himself at the center of a social media storm after making unconventional claims about the movie’s lackluster performance at the box office. Released on January 25, ‘Fighter’ failed to meet the high expectations set by its star-studded cast, featuring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone in lead roles, alongside Anil Kapoor, Akshay Oberoi, and Karan Singh Grover.

In a recent interview addressing the tepid response to his film, Anand attributed its struggle to connect with the Indian audience to the fact that 90% of them haven’t experienced air travel. According to the director, “Fighter is a huge leap. It’s a space that is unexplored and absolutely new for the Indian audience. There is no reference point for them. What they are seeing is a little… accha… such big stars, a commercial director, accha ye planes kya kar rahi he (what are these planes doing)? I am like this is my film, I don’t know this. If you realize, there is a huge percentage of our country… I would say 90% who have not flown in planes! Who has not been to an airport! So how do you expect them to know what’s happening in the air?”

This peculiar rationale has not been well-received on social media, where Anand is facing backlash for his unconventional explanation. Users are taking a humorous approach to criticize the director, drawing parallels to other successful films.

While the film has managed to accumulate approximately Rs 150 crores domestically in around nine days, it seems the director’s unique perspective on the audience’s lack of familiarity with air travel has sparked more conversation than the film itself.
