Calcutta HC stays demolition work at Abhishek Banerjee’s Amtala office until further orders

The Calcutta High Court has directed West Bengal authorities to stop all demolition work at Lok Sabha MP and Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s office in Amtala until further orders.

An anti-encroachment drive was carried out by the South 24 Parganas district administration amidst heavy security arrangements at Banerjee’s closed office in Amtala.

The action was reportedly taken after Banerjee failed to respond to the administration’s notices issued to him.

According to the South 24 Parganas district administration, the first notice was issued to Banerjee’s office in Amtala on June 30, seeking explanations and documents related to the construction.

Another notice was issued on July 7, instructing the Diamond Harbour MP to appear before the district administration on July 15 and submit his response.

However, the TMC leader did not respond to the notices, prompting the administration to go ahead with the demolition.

Reacting to the administration’s action, Banerjee said that this was not merely the demolition of his office but theft carried out by the BJP administration.

“The lawlessness in Bengal is on full display. Despite the Supreme Court’s (SC) and the High Court’s (HC) rulings holding bulldozer demolitions unconstitutional, my Lok Sabha constituency office at Amtala was demolished yesterday,” Banerjee said on X.

The TMC leader further slammed the West Bengal police for allegedly taking away laptops, documents, and other objects alongside “BJP goons.”

“This was not a demolition — it was theft in uniform, carried out with utter contempt for the rule of law while the matter remains sub judice before the High Court,” he added.
