Ranveer Singh says that he signed Gully Boy because he was blown away by the original track, Mere Gully Mein. The Zoya Akhtar directorial is inspired by the story of two street rappers — Divine and Naezy — who created the said song.

The Padmaavat actor said the original number had him hooked since the first time he saw it.

“When Zoya pitched me this film, Mere Gully Mein, the original video was the first thing she showed me. She said that this is the flavour of the film I want to make and the video completely blew my brains. I mugged up the entire rap and since then I started following Naezy and Divine’s music,” Ranveer told PTI.

“Mere Gully Mein for me, like for many others, is a huge breakthrough for the scene, the movement that’s happening in our society and I’m glad that I was the first one to whom this breakthrough of a song reached,” he said.

Ranveer Singh has sung rapper Naezy’s parts in the music album of Gully Boy.

“Zoya was unsure about my rapping skills at first. I remember that day at Purple Haze studio; Divine was there – he was actually in the booth with me; hyping me and guiding me. And it happened in the first take. Divine loved it, Zoya loved it and it was decided there and then after I rapped Naezy’s verse from Mere Gully Mein that I would be doing my own voice in the film,” the actor said.

The makers recently released the song, Mere Gully Mein, which is a remix track of Divine and Naezy’s breakout single. The video features Ranveer and Siddhant Chaturvedi as they rap away in the narrow alleys of Mumbai’s Dharavi slums.

Apart from Ranveer Singh, the film stars Alia Bhatt and Kalki Koechlin. The film will mark the first collaboration of Alia and Ranveer on the silver screen.

Gully Boy is directed by Zoya Akhtar and produced by Excel Entertainment — Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. The film is slated to release on 14 February 2019.
