A fresh political storm seems to be inching towards Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan’s forthcoming film Kedarnath. On Saturday, a senior BJP leader, Ajendra Ajay, demanded a ban on the film.

Ajay, who is part of the Uttrakhand BJP’s media relations team, wrote to Central Board of Film Certification chairman (CBFC) Prasoon Joshi that despite being set against the backdrop of a catastrophic deluge, the film made fun of Hindu sentiments.

“By setting a romantic love story against the backdrop of a huge tragedy that occurred at Kedarnath, a centre of faith for crores of Hindus, the filmmakers have shown great disrespect to the followers of the religion,” Ajay told PTI.

The BJP leader went on to accuse the film of promoting love jihad, as he said acute resentment prevailed among teertha purohits for projecting the film in such a disrespectful manner.

Warning of large-scale protests in the state if the film was released, Ajay urged the CBFC chairman to impose a ban on the movie produced by Ronnie Screwwala and Pragya Kapoor.

The film presents the love story of a Hindu tourist Mukku (played by Sara Ali Khan), who is on a pilgrimage to the hill shrine of Kedarnath, and, Mansoor, a Muslim (played by Sushant Singh Rajput). Mukku rides on the back of pithoo, Mansoor, to the shrine. The story is set in the backdrop of the devastating Uttarakhand floods of 2013.

Abhishek Kapoor directed Kedarnath marks the debut of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh’s daughter Sara Ali Khan.

Produced by RSVP and Guy In The Sky Pictures, the film is all set to release on December 7.
