Mangalpur police arrested two women for allegedly stealing gold jewellery from a showroom in the district. A woman and another person fled the spot.

The arrested have been identified as Sushama Sahu (44) and Puspalata Sahu (40) of Badabantia village under Pattamundai area of neighbouring Kendrapara district. Police also recovered some stolen ornaments from them.

They were forwarded to the local court on Tuesday and later remanded to judicial custody after their bail applications were rejected, police said. According to complaint filed by the proprietor of the showroom, Prabhakar Prusty, four persons including three women entered the shop and asked the staff to show them glod chain, anklet etc.

The saw several items and left without buying. The staff found a gold chain, two silver anklets etc missing. They caught two women who were in front of the shop. By that time the other woman and the man who accompanied her had fled from the scene, he added.

The showroom staff also recovered a pair of silver anklet from the duo women. Later, the local police were informed about the incident. “During interrogation the women confessed to their crime. They also admitted that four persons were working in tandem to rob jewellery shops,” said investigating officer Sushant Kumar Singh.
