The family of 17-year-old Anitha, who hanged herself recently after she failed to get admission to a medical college, has rejected the Tamil Nadu government’s Rs. 7-lakh financial aid.

Anitha, daughter of a daily labourer, hailed from a village in Ariyalur district. She had scored 1,176 out of 1,200 in her Class 12 state board examinations.

She had approached the Supreme Court with the plea that it should not insist on a common entrance exam for medical colleges. She had pleaded before the apex court that NEET was not favourable for students like her coming from rural background and students from cities will be at an advantageous position to crack it.

The Supreme Court ordered last month that medical college admissions in Tamil Nadu would be based not on Class 12 marks but on National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Anitha could not crack the NEET and eventually took her own life.

There were widespread protests across Tamil Nadu over her death.
