A doctor has been arrested in Maharashtra’s Ambernath after his wife allegedly died by suicide just one-and-a-half months after their marriage.

As per reports, the newlywed woman, identified as Vishakha Tilekar (26), was continuously facing dowry-related harassment. She tied the knot with Dr Nitin Tilekar, a resident of Ambernath, on April 30.

After registering a case in the matter, the Shivajinagar Police have arrested her husband, a while further investigation is underway.

The family members have claimed that their relationship appeared normal prior to the wedding, however, things between them changed soon afterwards. They have alleged that the victim was subjected to both mental and physical harassment over dowry demands.

In has been claimed by the family members that Vishakha was repeatedly taunted for not bringing sufficient money and jewellery from her parental home. Also, she was allegedly criticised over what her in-laws considered inadequate respect and arrangements during the wedding ceremony, IANS reported.

Also, they have said that the doctor used to frequently monitor Vishakha’s activities and had installed CCTV cameras inside and outside the house. They added that she was not allowed to communicate freely with her family members, while he constantly kept her under surveillance.

A complaint filed in the matter states that Vishakha was allegedly assaulted for interacting with their neighbours. Two days before the incident, the doctor is said to have beaten her for speaking to a female neighbour.

Further, it has been reported that before taking the extreme step, the woman talked to her mother about all the difficulties and harassment she was facing at her matrimonial home. The parents were concerned about her well-being and were reportedly making arrangements to bring her back to their home. However, Vishakha allegedly hanged herself at her residence.

Apart from the doctor, the Shivajinagar Police have registered a case against other members of his family under multiple Sections of the law related to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
