Monsoon arrives in HP

Widespread rains across the Himachal Pradesh marked the arrival of south-west monsoon in the state, though it has reached four days late than the expected date of 26 June.

The state Meteorological Department Director Manmohan Singh said the South-west monsoon has arrived in many parts of HP on 1 July.

“The monsoon advanced into many parts of the state including the districts of Kinnaur, Lahaul Spiti, Kullu, Mandi and parts of districts of Sirmaur, Shimla, Kangra and Chamba,” he said, adding it has also advanced into remaining parts of Bihar, most parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, some more parts of Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir.

Singh said the monsoon would further advance into the remaining areas of the state within 3 to 4 days. “From 1 June to 1 July, rainfall in HP was recorded 128 mm which is 21 per cent more than the normal during this period,” he said. 

Una district has recorded 88 per cent above normal rainfall during the period of 1 June to 1 July 2017 while district Kullu and Sirmour have received 82 and 71 per cent more than normal rainfall respectively. Other districts as Kangra (46 per cent), Shimla (35 per cent) and Solan (34 per cent) have also recorded rainfall more than their normal values.

The warmer areas of Himachal have although witnessed a decreased rainfall. Hamirpur and Bilaspur district have received 9 per cent less rainfall whereas Chamba saw 6 per cent and Mandi 3 per cent less precipitation than their normal.
