The Centre on Wednesday announced that residents living in unauthorised colonies in Delhi will now be given ownership rights to their houses.
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar informed that the Cabinet has taken the “historic decision” to give ownership rights to 40 lakhs people living in the national capital’s unauthorised colonies.
“This is the biggest decision taken at the meeting today, a historic decision to give ownership rights to people in these colonies,” Javadekar said.

A Bill on this is set to be introduced in the next session of the Parliament.
With this, people living in these colonies would now be allowed to register their houses.

The development is significant as Delhi is scheduled for assembly elections in early 2020.
As per government data, there are 1,797 unauthorised colonies in the national capital.
Earlier in July, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that people living in 1,797 unauthorised colonies in the city will soon get ownership rights for their properties as the Central Government had given a positive response to the Delhi Cabinet’s proposal on the same.
Delhi Urban Development Minister Satyendar Jain said that the colonies which had applied for regularisation before January 1, 2015, will be eligible, as agreed by both the central and Delhi governments.
