The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath on Monday summoned rape-accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar after the woman on Sunday had tried to commit suicide outside the CM’s residence in Lucknow.

The rape survivor had alleged that she was raped by the BJP MLA Kuldeep and his brother. Her father was rushed to a hospital from the district jail last night and died during treatment on Monday.

A day after the 18-year old girl attempted self-immolation, her father, who was in police custody in Unnao, died in mysterious circumstances in a local hospital on Monday.

The deceased named Pappu Singh had complained of abdominal pain on Sunday following which he was taken to the Unnao district hospital.

Rattled by the incident and the allegations of rape against a ruling party MLA, the state government swung into action and ordered the suspension of five cops. The policemen suspended are the station house officer (SHO) of Makhi police station in Unnao, Ashok Singh Bhadauria, the beat in charge inspector and three constables. The four henchmen of the MLA’s brother, who were accused of beating Pappu Singh, were also arrested by the police. However, the MLA’s brother, Atul Singh alias Jaideep Singh, who is the main accused in the beating case, is still at large. Reports alleged that the SHO had removed Atul Singh’s name from the complaint filed by the girl’s family members following physical assault incident on April 3.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the custodial death with state director general of police, OP Singh stating that strict action would be taken against those found guilty.

Reacting to the alleged rape and the custodial death of the victim’s father, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav in a tweet on Monday demanded a high-level and impartial inquiry into the custodial death.  He said the chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, should resign on moral grounds. Akhilesh said he was pained at the death of the victim’s father while in police custody.

The girl, who was accompanied by some female members of her family, attempted self-immolation in front of the chief minister’s residence in Lucknow on Sunday. Her self-immolation attempt was foiled by the security personnel present outside the chief minister’s residence and she was taken to the Gautampalli police station.  The girl accused the BJP MLA from Bangarmau (Unnao), Kuldeep Singh Sengar and his brother of rape and harassment. The MLA has reportedly denied the accusations and has alleged that some persons were trying to malign his image. Sengar was earlier in Samajwadi Party before switching over to the BJP prior to the 2017 assembly elections.

Police sources said the SP (crime), Lucknow has been sent to Unnao to conduct a inquiry into the custodial death.
