The CCTV cameras installed at different locations in Himachal Pradesh to reign in illegal mining mafia had failed in yielding desired results.

This was observed by a Division bench of HP High Court Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ajay Mohan Goel.

The court observed that it appears from the proceedings as well as the averments made in the affidavit that the installation of CCTV Cameras for the purpose of monitoring of illegal mining activities is not appearing to be as fruitful as was expected.

The Additional Advocate General has suggested that instead of CCTV Cameras, the possibility of using drones for the purpose of monitoring of illegal mining activities can be explored.

The option of deploying drones could be explored if it is economically viable and if it proves to be useful.

The court has directed the state government to examine this aspect and submit a report on the next date of hearing on 11 March 2019.
