Siliguri, 27 November
Four persons were detained for allegedly manhandling junior doctors at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital ( NBMCH) today.
The scuffle occurred when the relatives of a deceased, who was declared brought dead last night by NBMCH doctors, were demanding the body to be handed over to them and the junior doctors refusing, insisting on autopsy. Sikha Das ( 32), a resident of Tin Bati area, was declared brought dead last night.
According to the junior doctors, a mob of around 30 persons barged into the female medicine ward and attacked them. “We told them an autopsy is required and so we could not hand over the body. But they were in no mood to listen. Seemingly irritated by us insisting on post-mortem, they manhandled some junior doctors. We protested and demanded apology. We are worried about our security with such attacks recurring at regular intervals,” said a junior doctor, Mr Tushar Sarkar.
The NBMCH medical superintendent, Dr Sabyasachi Das said the junior doctors have submitted a complaint. He has forwarded it to police, he added. The body was finally sent for post-mortem after the accused apologised. Police said four persons, detained, were released on bail.
“The junior doctors handed over the accused to us. We did investigation and found three of those detained were not involved. The remaining one is kept under detention,” said a police officer.
The junior doctors said they would serve a memorandum to the Siliguri Metropolitan Police commissioner tomorrow, demanding steps to stop such incidents from recurring.
