The United States has launched retaliatory strikes on Iranian radar and drone command facilities after Tehran allegedly shot down an American MQ-1 drone over international waters, sharply escalating tensions in the region despite the ongoing ceasefire environment.

According to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were carried out over the weekend against radar systems and drone command-and-control infrastructure located in Goruk, Iran, and on Qeshm Island. The operation came in direct response to “aggressive Iranian actions” targeting US military assets.

US launches counter-strikes

US CENTCOM said American fighter aircraft responded rapidly after the reported drone incident, targeting Iranian air defence systems, a ground control station and two one-way attack drones that were allegedly threatening commercial and military vessels moving through regional waters.

The US military described the action as “measured and deliberate”, maintaining that the strikes were conducted under self-defence provisions following the downing of the MQ-1 drone.

The command further stated that no American service personnel were injured during the operation.

Drone shootdown sparks escalation

The military flare-up follows claims by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that its air defence units had intercepted and destroyed a US MQ-1 drone early Sunday after it allegedly entered Iranian airspace.

Iranian media outlet Tasnim reported that the drone was detected by IRGC surveillance systems before being targeted with advanced air defence missiles.

Iranian authorities claimed the aircraft had entered the area with the intention of carrying out hostile activity, a charge that Washington has rejected by asserting the drone was operating over international waters at the time it was brought down.

CENTCOM warns of further action

In its statement, CENTCOM said it would continue taking necessary steps to protect American personnel, military assets and maritime interests in the region against “unwarranted Iranian aggression”.

The latest exchange has once again raised concerns over the fragile security situation across West Asia, particularly around key maritime routes used for global energy shipments and military transit.
