Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday claimed that the Centre was preparing to pass on the burden of rising fuel costs to citizens once the current phase of “election relief” ends, warning of a fresh wave of inflation.

‎In a post on X, Gandhi wrote, “Election relief ends, brace for the heat of inflation! After April 29, watch out — petrol, diesel, everything will become more expensive.” He alleged that the government had retained gains when global crude oil prices were low but was now shifting the pressure onto the public as prices rise.

‎“When oil was cheap, the Modi government kept the profits. Now that it’s expensive, the burden will be put on you,” he said, targeting the administration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

‎Gandhi further accused the government of prioritising revenue over relief, adding, “A government that cashes in on cheap prices — while the public bears the brunt of inflation.”

‎The remarks come amid heightened political sparring over fuel pricing and cost-of-living pressures, issues that often take centre stage during election cycles. Opposition parties have repeatedly alleged that excise duties on petrol and diesel were kept high during periods of low international crude prices, allowing the Centre to shore up revenues.
