Veteran Hindi film icon Saira Banu offered a heartfelt reflection on the idea of India that her late husband, legendary actor Dilip Kumar, cherished and wished to safeguard, underscoring the principles of compassion, unity and shared humanity that he held dear.

Speaking ahead of Republic Day, Saira said Dilip Kumar believed the essence of the nation was not built on monuments or history books, but lived through the everyday acts of kindness, empathy and mutual respect among its people.

Saira Banu said her husband often stressed that India’s strength lay in its people, in their dignity, compassion, and willingness to lift each other up.
“He believed that when compassion guides us, even the impossible becomes achievable,” she shared, highlighting his deep faith in collective humanity.

Despite the country’s diversity in caste, culture, language and belief, what unifies India, she added, is the shared instinct to care for one another.

Saira explained that Republic Day was never merely a date for her, but “a feeling” tied to the ideals that India stands for.

Reflecting on her own experiences, she said that living abroad as a child in London further strengthened her love for her homeland, teaching her that nations are ultimately remembered for their people and their spirit, not their physical boundaries.

These works, she noted, reflected his belief in a united, compassionate India and his commitment to storytelling that resonated with the nation’s collective conscience.
