Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called on the Singaporean Prime Minister and discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations, expressing confidence that ties between the two nations will further deepen following Wong’s meeting with PM Modi.
“Pleased to call on PM Lawrence Wong of Singapore this morning in Delhi. Appreciate his constant encouragement for the strengthening of India-Singapore ties. Confident that his talks later today with PM Narendra Modi will chart a roadmap for our contemporary ties,” Jaishankar posted on X.
Following the meeting, Wong also shared his remarks on X, stating, “With India External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar — we discussed regional & global developments, and the good progress in India-SG cooperation.”
Prime Minister Wong described the beginning of his India visit as “productive.” In a post on X, he said, “Had a productive start to my visit in New Delhi. Last evening, I joined overseas Singaporeans and friends of Singapore for a special SG60 reception. Many had travelled from different parts of India—Chennai, Mumbai, and beyond—to be part of this occasion.”
Wong noted that several business leaders from Singapore’s semiconductor industry also attended the reception, as they were in the city for the Semicon India event.
“It was truly heartening to hear their stories and inspiring to see everyone flying our Singapore flag high in India,” he added.
The Singaporean Prime Minister arrived in New Delhi on Tuesday for a three-day official visit, during which he is set to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi and engage with top Indian leaders and ministers.
Singapore is an important partner for India, especially in the framework of the ‘Act East’ Policy. During Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Singapore in September 2024, bilateral ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The visit also coincides with the 60th anniversary of India-Singapore diplomatic relations, reaffirming the commitment of both countries to further strengthen their partnership. “The visit will provide an opportunity for both Prime Ministers to review our robust and multifaceted cooperation and to set the path for future collaboration. The two Prime Ministers will also engage on regional and international issues of mutual interest,” the MEA said.
