Directed by Craig Gillespie, known for ‘I, Tonya’ and ‘Cruella’, this new iteration of ‘Supergirl’ promises to break away from the bright, hopeful portrayals of the past.

Instead, Alcock’s character will bring a grittier, more complex version of Kara Zor-El to the screen.

Fans who stayed through the credits of ‘Superman’ were already given a hint of what’s to come, as Alcock made a cameo appearance as Supergirl at the end of the film.

This ‘Supergirl’ is an adaptation from Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic series, which reimagines Kara’s story in a much darker light. Unlike her cousin Kal-El (Superman), who found refuge on Earth as a baby, this Kara Zor-El watched her home planet Krypton crumble before her eyes.

That traumatic past has made her tougher, less idealistic, and ready for vengeance when necessary.

When introducing the project as part of the DC Studios slate, James Gunn had teased fans by saying, “She’s not exactly the Supergirl we are used to seeing.”

Joining Alcock in this cosmic adventure is Matthias Schoenaerts, who plays Krem of the Yellow Hills, a brutal villain from the comics. Eve Ridley takes on the role of Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl who persuades Supergirl to track down Krem and bring him to justice.

The cast also features David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham as Kara’s parents.

Fans will get to see some familiar DC Universe favorites, too. Jason Momoa steps into the role of the wild alien mercenary Lobo, while the beloved Krypto the Superdog will also make an appearance.

Milly Alcock, who became a breakout star with her portrayal of young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’, now takes on the weight of an entire galaxy with her role as the “Maid of Might.”
