Bhopal, 21 July
A 28-year-old mother of two was killed and three members of her family seriously injured when a married man, with whom she was allegedly having an extra-marital affair, threw acid on them while they were sleeping, in their house in Morena district, about 465 kilometers north of Bhopal early on Sunday.
According to police, the deceased, Rubi Gupta, her cousin brothers Janu (18) and Raju (13) and grandmother Chandra Kala (60) were critically injured when the accused Yogendra Singh Tomar, threw acid on them in Porsa village.
They were rushed to a district hospital in Morena, where Rubi died due to her injuries.
The other victims were referred to the hospital of Gajraraje Medical college, Gwalior.
The victim sustained serious injuries on her chest. When her cousins and grandmother offered resistance, the accused threw acid on them too.
Police said according to initial investigation, the accused had an affair with the deceased. However, since she was not willing to live with him, he took the drastic step.
A manhunt has been launched to arrest the accused, a resident of Ambah village, located 17 km from the victim’s village. Some of his relatives have also been detained for interrogation, police said.
According to police, the woman was married to Sanju Gupta and had two children. When her husband came to know about her affair with Yogendra Singh Tomar, he deserted her more than a year ago.
Subsequently, she started living at her parents’ house in Porsa. Before moving to her parents place, she reportedly stayed with Tomar for quite some time.
She allegedly broke up with Tomar a month ago after he started harassing her. Since then, she was living at her uncle’s house in Agra.
However, Tomar was pressurising her to stay with him.
Last week Tomar convinced Rubi to come to her parental house in Porsa village to discuss and resolve the matter, police said.
She apparently believed him and came to her mother’s house.
A case has been registered against Tomar on the basis of statements given by the deceased’s grandmother. She informed police that Tomar has been harassing her for the past one year.
"We have decided to directly impose Section 307 IPC (attempt to murder) in case of any acid attack, while a case of murder under Section 302 IPC is the natural course of action if the victim dies," Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan told the media at his official residence here today afternoon.
